Pro-democracy candidates were victorious in 347 of the 452 district council seats up for grabs; pro-Beijing candidates won 60 seats, while independents - many of them pro-democracy - got 45, they say.
Some 2.94 million people voted in the election, compared to 1.4 million in 2015.
The result of Sunday’s elections could force the central government in Beijing to rethink how to handle the unrest, which is now in its sixth month. The district councils have little power, but the vote became a referendum on public support for the protests.
