Copa Libertadores 2019

By Chris Dinsdale

July 23, 2019 - August 1, 2019 - The Copa Libertadores, South America’s premier club competition enters the knock-out stages with defending champions River Plate of Argentina pitted against Brazilian team Cruzeiro. A total of 11 former champions remain in the competition, including including last season’s finalists and six-time champions Boca Juniors against Athletico Paranaense, while 2017 winners Gremio clash with Libertad. The matches begin July 23-25.

In a new format, Santiago, in Chile, will host the first single match final in the tournament’s history. Argentineans River Plate will continue their campaign in the knock-out stages aiming to claim successive titles after victory over fierce rivals Boca Juniors in 2018 -- with the second leg of the final taking place in Madrid, after violent scenes marred the first leg in Buenos Aires.
