The most intense hurricanes to strike the United States

By Ninian Carter

October 11, 2018 - Hurricane Michael struck the Florida Panhandle as a Category 4 storm, the third most powerful hurricane ever to hit the United States.

One of the strongest storms in American history has battered north-west Florida, flooding homes, washing away beaches and snapping trees.

Hurricane Michael made landfall on October 10 as a category four storm with 155mph (250km/h) winds, killing at least two people, including a child. It has now weakened to a tropical storm and is on its way to the Carolinas.

Residents across the southern U.S. have been warned of the continuing danger from downed powerlines, flash floods, and landslides. There are fears too for people who ignored evacuation warnings in some of the areas now flooded. More than 400,000 homes and businesses were left without electricity in Florida, Alabama and Georgia.
