New York Marathon 2018

By Chris Dinsdale

November 4, 2018 - The 48th running of the New York City Marathon, and the concluding race of the six annual World Marathon Majors. The race starts in Staten Island and finishes in Central Park.

New York Marathon course records could tumble as elite runners in both the men’s and women’s field look set to challenge existing records held by Geoffrey Mutai (2:05:06, 2011) and Margaret Okayo (2:22:31, 2003) respectively.

In the men’s race, Kenya’s Geoffrey Mutai and Wilson Kipsang will face tough competition from Ethiopia’s Lelisa Desisa and Gebre Gebremariam -- whose personal bests are both quicker than Mutai’s course record. If Mutai claims his third title in New York, he will become the first triple champion since Alberto Salazar in 1982.

In the woman’s race, Kenyan Mary Keitany competes in her first marathon since the London Olympics in 2012, and Buzunesh Deba of Ethiopia aims to better her second-place finish of 2011.
