EARTHQUAKE

Toll exceeds 840 in Indonesia disaster

By Mike Tyler

October 1, 2018 - The death toll from a devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi has surpassed 840 and is likely to rise further.

The number of dead, largely from the city of Palu, is expected to keep rising as areas cut off by the damage are reached. The remote fishing village of Donggala is feared to be badly hit.

Many people are reportedly trapped in the rubble of buildings that collapsed in Friday’s 7.5-magnitude earthquake, which generated a tsunami said to have been as high as six metres in places.
