French Open expansion project

By Mike Tyler

May 27, 2018 - June 10, 2018 - This year’s French Open tennis tournament marks Roland Garros’ 90th anniversary. The historic stadium will unveil various new additions – the new Village, courts 7, 9 and 18, and the restored burrstone buildings in the Auteuil Greenhouse Gardens.

Renovation of the Paris complex is expected to be complete by 2020, according to French construction company Vinci SA, with work pausing each year while the tournament is played. The planned revamp will cost over $400 million, including a retractable roof over the main Philippe-Chatrier court.

Eventually, the stadium will have 18 clay courts, with increased space and comfort for players and spectators, and state-of-the-art facilities. In its tournament configuration, the site will occupy over 11 hectares, in contrast to its current 8.6 hectares.

The Roland Garros, after whom the tennis stadium complex in Paris is named was the French aviator who was shot down in 2015 in World War I, but survived and was taken prisoner.
