FAQ: Why can’t I find a graphic? Trouble searching?

When you search, if no graphics fill the criteria you have selected, you get an error message. Click on your browser’s back arrow to have another go. Remember:

  • Use English words: Although graphics are available in multiple languages, when you search you need to use English words. This is because all graphics have English descriptions and keywords (regardless of what language the graphic itself has been translated into).
  • Search strategy: When you search for graphics, you are more likely to get no hits than too many hits! This is because graphics are relatively scarce (compared for example with photographs). So it is a good idea to make your search more general at first and then refine.
  • Roots of words: Our search system is not intelligent and will not guess what you mean. So it is safer to enter Portu as a keyword rather than Portugal or Portuguese; and countr than countries or country. Do not add a string of keywords because the absence of any one of these will make the search fail.

21 days to go until NEW GRAPHIC NEWS - a new website for a new era.

28 years ago — April 2, 1991 — the original Graphic News launched using a precursor to today’s websites that used email technology. These enabled infographics to be delivered electronically around the world over telephone lines. What was possible was very limited - It took 10 minutes for a 100K file to download.

Since then delivery speeds and website technology have moved on. The new website will offer the best online experience possible now, adding many new features (and offering new opportunities for the future), but still enabling existing users to select and download infographics and enjoy the distinct brand of visual journalism that is Graphic News.

Over the coming days I will give further information. Please contact me if you have any questions. Fiona Roberts, froberts @ graphicnews.com
