How to embed a linked image?

If you download a ZIP file from the archive and it hasn't been reissued, it may decompresses to a folder containing an Illustrator file and a linked JPG file. Embedding was not used at that time to give smaller file sizes, but the two files had be kept together so the Illustrator file could "pull in" the linked file when it was opens. This problem is avoided now by embedding images, but sometimes the artist forgets to embed the images used To reissue a legacy graphic with a linked image:

• Decompress the .zip and locate the ai and the jpg within the folder
• Open the ai in Adobe Illustrator. The image will be on the Placed Art Layer. Unlock the Placed Art Layer
• Open the Links Pallet: Go to Top menu > Window > Links (Pallet will disappear if it was already open, you need to reopen the Link pallet from Top menu to see it again)
• Select the image: Click on the image in the Link pallet and the pallet should turn blue.

NOTE: There should only be one linked image however many pictures elements there are within a graphic because the picture elements are joined and flattened by the artist into one element.

• Click on the small arrow on the top right of the pallet to open the drop down menu and select Embed Image. You will see an icon appear by the linked filename to show that it is now embedded.
• Go to top Menu > View > Publish View (at the bottom of the drop down menu). This locks and shows the layers consistently. It should also position the graphic in the centre of the window.
• Go to top menu > File > Save As. Check the file is named correctly and save first to Adobe Illustrator and then to Adobe PDF.

The JPG and folder can now be discarded.
