The Event

As graphics are produced for particular events, and because data can change over time, from 2003 Graphic News started to record details of the event to which each graphic related.

This was controversial at that time because it was felt that editors would (if they were any good) be familiar with topical news stories and so spelling out the context would be insulting! However, it was argued that the graphics editor was not a specialist and so spelling out why a graphic was produced would help them communicate with the various page editors. Also if a page editor happened to visit the Graphic News website themselves they would inevitably see graphics outside their area of expertise – there is nothing more aversive than seeing a graphic and wondering why it was produced!

Thanks to the inclusion of contextual information, the Graphic News archive is a unique historical record of the news and events since 1991.
